In 1906, the Natal Museum of South Africa first published the Annals of the Natal Government Museum.
Government was dropped from the title after the Union of South Africa was established in 1910. The journal covered natural sciences, archaeology, anthropology and history. Then, the journal split into the Natal Museum Journal of Humanities and African Invertebrates.
The name of Natal Museum Journal of Humanities later changed to Southern African Humanities. Topics include archaeology, anthropology, history, material culture and heritage studies.
The journal is published annually the the Natal Museum and is indexed and abstracted in the Thomson Reuters Arts and Humanities Citation Index.
